Dr Jeyakumar says that the government is pro-big business – http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/psms-jeyakumar-finds-pride-in-flying-banner-against-tppa

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — It is a battle that may be far from ending, but PSM’s Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj counts his resistance to the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) as his biggest milestones of the year.

A secretive trade deal that critics contend will allow corporations to subvert the rights of countries and citizens as well as cause the price of generic medicine to go up, raising awareness on the TPPA was top of Dr Jeyakumar’s list when polled on his highlight of 2013.

“Basically, our government is trying to please large corporate leaders so that they’ll come and invest in the country,” Dr Jeyakumar told The Malay Mail Online in a phone interview recently.

“That necessarily means doing things that will impact negatively on ordinary people, for example, wanting to sign the TPPA to get American companies to come and invest,” he added.

The TPPA is a free trade agreement that has been negotiated by the US, Malaysia and nine other nations as part of the larger Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership since 2010.

Critics allege that the agreement has since been co-opted by powerful corporations to allow them to trample over existing consumer, worker and environmental rights in signatory countries.

Following vociferous resistance, International Trade and Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Mohamed said last month that nothing has been finalised and that negotiations between the US, Malaysia and nine other nations are still ongoing…

“…It is time to end the era of rigged corporate trade and begin fair trade that respects all people and the planet; and that is developed in an open and transparent manner.

Join the Fair Trade Brigade either in Congress or where you live. Tell your member of Congress to vote “no” on Fast Track and pass a resolution locally that declares your community to be a fair trade zone. Visit FlushtheTPP.org for more information on what you can do.”
